How do I avoid penalties as a US expat?

What penalties could I face?

If you skip filing US taxes from abroad, the IRS could collect old tax info to approximate how much tax you owe and it’s possible you could pay more than you need to. Plus, you could be penalized by the IRS for failure to file, failure to pay, or for owning a dishonored check.

How can I avoid penalties?

There are two ways you, as a US expat, can avoid IRS penalties:

  1. File your US tax return with MyExpatTaxes, or request an extension with the IRS by June 15.
  2. Make up any years of missed filings through the Streamlined Procedure.
