The IRS has strict e-filing requirements and if you haven’t complied with IRS rules, your tax return will most likely be rejected.
Common issues that could cause a rejection
We’ll notify you by email if your tax return has been rejected due to common issue such as a mis-match in the spelling of your name, or if your Social Security Number doesn’t match the IRS record. Here are the steps to follow:
- Check and review the cause of the rejection suggested in the email.
- Follow the instructions to update your details in our software. The email contains direct links, so be sure to log in to your MyExpatTaxes account before clicking so the links work.
- Once you’ve completed the changes, reply directly to the email from MET Support team and we’ll finalize your taxes, ready to resubmit to the IRS.
Other issues that could cause a rejection
If you have checked that you correctly input your name, date of birth, and Social Security Number in our software, you may need to reach out to the IRS and SSA to verify if your information is accurate in their database:
- To contact the IRS go to Help with tax questions - International taxpayers or Contact my local office internationally.
- We recommend this IRS phone number: +1 267-941-1000 for international callers or overseas taxpayers, Option #1, #4, #1 to speak to an IRS Agent specifically about your case.
- See all contact details for the SSA on their International Operations page.
If we receive a rejection due to your tax return having already been successfully filed and accepted by the IRS and the tax return was not submitted by you, someone might have fraudulently filed using your information, in which case you should claim Identity Fraud with the IRS:
- Go to the IRS Guide to Identity Theft and see section “Tax-Related Identity Theft”.
