What to Do if Your Mailed Tax Returns Are Returned to Sender?

If your mailed tax return (such as a Streamlined package) is returned to you, here’s what to do and how to avoid future issues.

Here's an overview of what we'll cover—click any section to jump ahead.

  • Understanding the Deadlines
  • Keep Records of the Returned Package
  • Use the Correct IRS Mailing Address
  • Common Mailing Issues
  • How We Can Help

Understanding the Deadlines

  • June 15 Deadline - This applies only to the current year’s return for those living abroad.
  • October 15 Deadline – The extended deadline for those who filed Form 4868 before by the original due date of their return.
  • Streamlined Returns do not share the October 15 deadline. If your Streamlined returns are returned to you, there is no specific filing deadline, but we recommend re-sending them as soon as possible.

Keep Records of the Returned Package

If your package is returned, keep:

  • The envelope/package shows the IRS address and postmark.
  • Any return-to-sender label or explanation from the postal service.

These records can be helpful if the IRS later issues a notice regarding your filing.

Use the Correct IRS Mailing Address

Please ensure you are using the correct IRS address for Streamlined submissions.

The current IRS address for Streamlined submissions is:

Internal Revenue Service

3651 South I-H 35

Stop 6063 AUSC

Attn: Streamlined Foreign Offshore

Austin, TX 78741

USA

IRS – US Taxpayers Residing Outside the United States

For the current year’s return, if you are a taxpayer residing outside the US:

Department of the Treasury

Internal Revenue Service

Austin, TX 73301-0215, USA

IRS – Where to File Form 1040 (International Taxpayers)

Common Mailing Issues

Most clients are able to send their returns without any problems. Some international couriers may not deliver to the IRS addresses listed above. This is uncommon but has been reported in certain countries, such as France.

Tip: DHL is often more reliable for international deliveries.

How We Can Help

While we cannot cover postal or courier fees, please inform us if your package is returned. Our team can help guide you through next steps to ensure your return reaches the IRS successfully.
