If you are a US citizen, you need to report your worldwide income if you meet the IRS tax filing threshold. For the latest filing thresholds, check out our Expat Tax Guide.
How to report income
With MyExpatTaxes, you’ll be guided by our software to select the types of income that need to be reported. Income is classified as either US source or Foreign source.
To input US source income
- Click “US INCOME & ASSETS” in the side navigation menu, and “US Tax Documents” from the sub-menu.
- Click the checkboxes to select all the types of US source income you received (for example, US Wages, Dividend Income, Stock Sale Income) and click “Save”. The software will guide you to upload documents for your US source income.
To input foreign source income
This section is for additional income; you should skip any forms of income already entered with your US Tax Forms.
- Click “Your Expat Taxes” in the side navigation menu, and “Foreign and Other Income” from the sub-menu.
- Click the checkboxes to select all forms of foreign income received (for example, Foreign Employment Compensation, Worldwide Investment Income, Worldwide Rental Income) and click “Save”. The software will guide you to add the details for your foreign income.
Once you have input any US and foreign source incomes, our software will automatically calculate the most beneficial expat tax benefit based on your tax situation. If the software identifies any potential issues, one of our Tax Professional will review and resolve your tax case.
