I live in a country whose tax rate is higher than in the US; why do I still have to pay US taxes?

US tax law requires that if you owe US taxes after all exclusions and credits have been applied, you have to pay. This obligation is tied to your US citizenship and is even mentioned in your passport.

Some people decide to withdraw their duty to file and pay US taxes while abroad, but the renunciation process is complex and expensive - we don't suggest it!
