Do You Need To File a US Tax Return Abroad? (Probably)
Most expats do not end up owing taxes as a US expat because of the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion and Foreign Tax Credit benefits. However, expats still need to file their taxes annually if their gross worldwide income is over the basic filing threshold.
So even if you do not owe any taxes to the IRS, it’s very likely that you still need to file.
