Error Message
‘PrimaryPriorYearAGIAmt' in the Return Header must match the e-File database.’
Why This Happens
The IRS uses your prior-year AGI to verify your identity when you e-file.
This rejection typically happens because:
- The AGI entered does not match IRS records
- Last year’s return was amended, and the wrong AGI was used
- The prior-year return was processed with a different amount
- The IRS system has not been fully updated yet
Your prior-year AGI can be found on Line 11 of Form 1040 from last year’s tax return.
How to Resolve
You have two options:
Option 1: Update Your Prior-Year AGI
- Log in to your MyExpatTaxes account.
- Enter your correct prior-year AGI.
- Save your changes.
- Resubmit your return.
Option 2: Authorize Us to E-File on Your Behalf
If you’re unsure about your AGI:
- Log in to your MyExpatTaxes account.
- Download Form 8879.
- Sign and upload the completed form.
This authorizes us to e-file your return on your behalf.
What You Need to Know
- Use the AGI from your originally filed return, not an amended version.
- If your prior-year return was filed very recently, the IRS system may not recognize it yet.
- If the IRS processed your return late last year, entering 0 as your AGI may resolve the issue.
